- Welcoming Guild Wars to the Game-Gate
-January 09, 2005, 23:40 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

Guild Wars has actually been an official member of the Game-Gate since last year (okay, Dec 31st to be exact-shesh), but I'm still going to announce it like it just happened today. Not that many of you would really know the difference... or care... but probably would much rather see me doused in gasoline and lit on fire.

I just spent the last 6 hours making the pages for the Game-Gate's new member: Guild Wars.

And I think it looks mighty slick if I say-so-myself.

So far the page is 99% Desktop Wallpapers, but I certainly enjoy good wallpapers. Right now there are 10 Concept Art images (I made about 1/2 of the awesome looking Concept Art Images into properly scale-able wallpapers), 87 wallpapers and 28 WIDESCREEN wallpapers, a first for the Game-Gate (except the 1 widescreen Halo picture posted). Widescreen wallpapers are slowly becoming more available.. Anyway, enjoy, and for anyone who has Guild Wars, the World Map (found in the Extras) will be very useful to you.

- Marathon: A BOB's story
-December 24, 2005, 16:40 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

"Frog Blast The Vent Core!"
"AH!"
"Cut it out!"
"Watch it."
"Get me outta here!"
"Get him, he's a traitor!"

This was the story about a BOB, who after the baddies were dispatched we loved to blast appart just for his ammunition. And you can continue the unecessary level of carnage from the 'good times' on the newly remade Marathon page on the Game-Gate. Also showcasing Bounder's 'Fractured' custom wallpaper - cross between Marathon and Halo. Which we all know, that Halo is a continuation of the Marathon Trilogy, even if it's not 'offical'. (Here is a direct link to the image)

Oh, and just because I havn't posted a new update on the main page here in over 10 months, doesn't mean that I havn't been doing anything to the website. You should check out the very active forum. Perhaps even several hundred Half-Life wallpapers aren't enough for ya, but what can I say other than:

MERRY CHRISTMAS and may all the annoying people that you wish would die, do so in a manner befiting of their stupidity.

- AvP2 Crash - Mac OS 10.3
-February 13, 2005, 21:40 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

For the longest time I have been stuck at a certain spot in Aliens versus Predator 2 where the game would crash out and give me an error message with a bomb on it, so I sent the following e-mail to MacPlay on December 29th 2004:

"System: Mac OS 10.3.7
Processor: Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5
RAM: 1 GB DDR SDRAM
Graphics Card: ATI 9600 XT

AVP2, fully updated with the patch that I downloaded from MacPlay labled: "AVP2-2003-08-08.dmg.sit" (which is 1.0.9.6 version 33).

The problem that I am experiencing is AVP2 crashing in the same spot, no matter WHAT I do.

It happens on the Marine Level where one of your objectives is to "Open Containment Tunnel 5" right at the exact spot after a guy gets pulled into a vent directly infront of me, I can do anything I want (backtrack etc...) but once I take 2 steps into that room the game crashes. The "OmniGroup Crash Catcher" then launches and tells me:

"AVP2 has encountered an unrecoverable error. (The system and other applications have not been affected.) Please enter any details you may recall about what you were doing when the application crashed. This will help us to improve future releases of AVP2."

I have been getting this same crash on previous versions of 10.3 as well...

Your help would be appreciated, because this was not a cheap game, and I've hardly played it!!

Thank you very much for your time.
"

On January 9th, 2005 I got the following response from Support@MacPlay.com:

"AVP2 is only supported up to OS 10.2.6

i would reccomend playing the game through this OS

Tech Support
"

What a freaking joke! Now it is well over a month later (and I've been having this problem ever since I upgraded to 10.3 in the early part of summer '04) and there is still *no* fix for the game. Holy crap, how complicated can it be, talk about not supporting their games very well! The best fix they can offer is to either downgrade my system or make it dual bootable with 10.2.6 just so I can play AvP2. Makes you appreciate REAL game companies like Blizzard who jump at the opportunity to make their games better. MacPlay needs to learn good business sense or they won't survive much longer. They'll die by the laws of Economics or by my bare hands!

Learn more about SETI.

Also 3 new games have taken time from their pressing schedules to join the Game-Gate's ranks (at gunpoint that is...), Aliens vs Predator 1 & 2 and Neverwinter Nights

Fresh from the digital presses is another edition of the Game-Gate's original flair of Carnage Stories. This paticular short volume (Dreams) is more abstract by nature - heck, maybe it was just too late at night when minds become twisted and dark in thought patterns.

Enjoy!

-Buying Death & Destruction
-August 12, 2004, 09:42 MST:
Picard: | Top

This last weekend, Me and my wife took off to Fort Lewis in Washington to visit her her sister and husband. During the trip, they took me to a little store that only army personnel are allowed to purchase product from. It has all sorts of army gear and what not. Like myself, Vorlon is an avid paintballer. But unlike myself, Vorlon has a whole closet dedicated to army gear. He "claims" that it is for paintballing, although one can hardly understand why one would need a kevlar vest and helment for such a game.

Anyway, being as he got me some nice gifts for my wedding (now we are talking about gifts for a man, ya know, the ones with grenades, guns, and fishing poles, not ceramic bird houses). Even though he neatly tucked some explosives inside the gifts, which I disarmed before anything bad could happen, it was the thought that counts. Right?

So I decided to buy him some army gear that I was in the position to buy. So I told my brother-in-law to show me some good gear that could be used for paintballing. He procceeded to point out thing after thing. And each and every time he would say "What about this/these", he was followed up by me saying "He's got it already"

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a scary thought to me. He has every bit of gear that our armed forces have, and then some. He must be stopped. Contact me (Picard) with all Anti Vorlon claims and petitions (funds also accepted) to help in this cause.

Ok, now I know that your wondering what this little story has to do with an actuall update on the page. And to tell you the truth, it has nothing to do with updates. Ok, maybe a little.

I am in the process of putting together another page for a game that has gotten little fame. Pity, it should be more well known. If you thought that Warcraft 3 was a good Role-Playing-Strategy, then check out Warlords Battlecry. The third one was just released, but you'll still have fun with even the second one. This is a cry to all those who want to find that special game that they can call their own. You owe it to yourself to indulge yourself in the mass amounts of fun that this game can offer. Give it a try, there is a demo out for each one

Warlords: Battlecry III demo
Warlords: Battlecry II demo

In the meantime, I will be attempting to get those needed files for those of you who decide that it is a game that needs to be added to your collection. This will be definite project for me, considering how FEW sites exist out there for this great game. So in order to ensure some great content, PLEASE, if you have any scenarios or anything that you've created for Warlords Battllcry II or III, Send us the file with the proper accolades.

-The Living Dead
-July 15, 2004, 12:34 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

Well after collaborating with the 3rd Reich's Paranormal Division, the Death Heads, and the SS we successfully raised the living dead to fix the Game-Gate's web e-mailers.

(#1 sign that you've played Return To Castle Wolfenstein way too much..)

So now if you ever come accross '404.html' (which says "Somewhere, Something Went Terribly Wrong") you can e-mail us about the link that failed, and what page it was on - all without leaving the comfort of your HTML browser.

And since the Living Dead are not covered by current US labor laws we also forced them to implement the new & working mailer in the Contact Us section of the Game-Gate

We planned on keeping them around (they are really good at what they do - and "handy in a pinch") but unfortunatly Aragorn showed up and told them that he held their oaths fullfilled.

Needless to say, we probably will not be seeing great & miraculous strides of improvement that a bunch of rotten corpes were able to bring.

*Eyes Picard* hmmm.. yes.. would make a good corpes indeed...

-Will I die?

Picard: | Top

I didn't see it coming. Caught in my own internal bliss like a "sweet-toothed" child swimming in a vault of candy the same way the good ol' Scrooge McDuck swam in his money. Nothing soothed my soul like watching fake blood on a television screen. And as if struck by lightning, something entered my chest, taking a hole bigger than my fist out my back.

I crawled towards the phone, the blood staining the carpet. How would I ever get those stains out, I wondered. As my arms pulled my body into the kitchen, the blood streaking across the cheap linoleum it suddenly hit me.

This was the same, painfully slow pace in which the Age of Empires/Mythology pages were adding content and usability. So after a long healing process, rehabilitation, and life threatning threats from Vorlon (And please, drop the act, I know it was you) I went hard to work. . . . Sort of.

So ladies and Gentlemen, without further ado, we present to you, a fully funtional, bugless (fingers are still crossed on this one.) and here for your enjoyment purposes only, is the entire Age of -- *puts hand on microphone and talks to his assistant for several seconds in a low whisper*

Ok, I'm sorry. It seems that JUST the Maps pages are all up. Enjoy the maps that have been added. I assure more content for these games will come. But for now, I have some vengence to exact on a particular person.

That is the question of every hard working college student who happens to live on campus, in dorms, or share a house/apartment (or just have really crappy redneck neighbors like myself =). They may have feelings similar to the Grinch, who stole Christmas - albeit infinitely more violent - involving shotguns, frag grenades, and 2x4's (with the occasional crowbar/pipe wrench for the Half-Life addict in you). To help you vent some steam whilst adding to your list of people to kill, make some noise of your own with the 5 new StarCraft mp3's.

-Brand Spanking New Forum!
-June 22, 2004, 23:36 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

Announcing the Game-Gate's all new and ready to go Forum! Astonishingly enough, this is the Game-Gate's second forum. Several years ago, I set up one from a site that offered free hosted forums, but it never took hold or looked as dashing as this one (let alone actually hosted by the Game-Gate). Let us all give a round of applause (please hold the sniper shots until the end) to Admin Philbo for his persistence in the Game-Gate having its own Forum (mostly pushing me to do something about it, and then finding the slick phpBB installer and helping me figure out how to use it!)

The best part about the forum is that it now gives gamers a place to gather and discuss games, get helps/tips from one another - and help the Game-Gate to grow with the files that You want or are trying to find.

And there is a handy section in the Forum where you can hear from other Gamer's thoughts about games you've been wondering about - no more being led astray by the 'reviews' that are there to just get you to buy a crapy game with a cool box. (Like the Nintendo days - awsome box art, but inside was a completely unplayable game). That's where I'll be posting soon my thoughts on a few games I've reciently played, such as Call of Duty *grin*

Oh, you may shoot now...
*takes a bow and exits*
*BANG!!!* (multiple shots ring out echoing off near-by buildings...)

-Half-Life (finally) & an Icewind Dale Surprise
-June 16, 2004, 07:30 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

Half-Life Alien Wallpaper It has been a long time since a new game joined the ranks of the Game-Gate's ever increasing collection, so what a better game to do so than Half-Life!? Unfortunately there are no custom maps, map creation tools, cheats, or total conversion - infact "all" that I have posted for Half-Life is a staggering 61 Wallpaper / Desktop pictures. Which is a real feat indeed if you ask me since Half-Life seems to me to be one of the *most* difficult games to find decent desktop picts for that are NOT just screen shots from the game (which is so prevalent on any game wallpaper website). I take pride in the fact that (IMHO) the Game-Gate has one of the best collections of desktop picts for such a wide variety of games. And you don't have to dig through endless pages of garbage and web adds to get to the files and Pictures that you want!

Icewind Dale Wallpaper Picard had given me his entire wallpaper collection (which is where a bunch of the Half-Life Desktop Pictures came from) and in them I found an Icewind Dale wallpaper that I already had, but surprisingly had somehow managed to be exluded from being posted on the Game-Gate.

Help Support the Game-Gate by sending in your your custom maps or anything you have that we don't! (such as updates, wallpappers, strategy tips...etc!)

I have finally posted every last Pax Imperia 1 & Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain pictures that I have - which increased the Pax Imperia images nearly three fold! The highlight, I guess you could say, would be the beta pictures of Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain.

-Marathon & Halo 2 Updates
-June 01, 2004, 19:09 MST:
Vorlon: | Top

Halo Atmosphere Wallpaper Fourteen new desktop pictures / wallpapers of Halo 1 & 2 have been posted. Halo 1: One can be found in the 1024x768 resolution, four in 1280x1024.
Halo 2: Seven in 1280x1024 resolution, and the other two are the enormous 1600x1200 resolution.

The entire Marathon's have finally been re-mapped to the new Game-Gate style. I do have to admit that I need to work on the 'PC' side of the Marathon 2 file links - I have not made the .zip's let alone uploaded them yet. I have also posted two other Marathon's to add to Bungie's Marathon Trilogy, Marathon Evil and Marathon Tempus Irae which are made by third parties - but the conversions are there to be downloaded for the nostalgic Mac gamers.

After the Marathon update, I can finally annouce that every game and their subsequent pages have been updated to the new Game-Gate format. And all their links work too. (Unless I missed something) - Which is kind of our goal here at the Game-Gate, to provide working links with working files, not like so many other sites where you have to dig through the mountains of garbage (pop-ups and banner adds) just to get your hands on a picture or file - then you have to fiddle with their site to actually SAVE the item to your hard drive (then pray that the link is valid!). So really, if a link or file is corrupt, Contact Us and we will fix it post haste.

Two items of business for today. First off, the old Age of Empires/Empires II is in the process of coming back online. Not much to look at now, but keep watching as more goodies will come to life there. In addition to the Age of Empires pages, you will be able to get all your Age of Mythology goodies there as well.

Next on our list is to tell you about our awsome set of Main Page pictures that we have. We used to change them once a month to keep the page a little fresh. If you'll notice now it pulls up a random picture every visit to the page. Not neccesarily pulitzer prize winning stuff, but we thought it was pretty cool.

I just finished uploading the picture for the Game-Gate's newest file, a movie called Nuclear Cannon. It is a cool quicktime movie that my brother sent me where someone put nuclear explosions to classical music!

An item I did forget to mention earlier was the posting of my first Windows programming attempt titled Militant Mayhem. (made with MFC in Microsoft Visual Studio.Net) - One might take note of the usual 'Game-Gate' style humor with these recent files.

I guess that would explain my favorite commercial line about movies, "In it, do things blow up?"

-Pax and Warcraft grows
-April 11, 2004, 02:20 MST:
Vorlon : | Top

The Pax Imperia page has completely changed, not only looking better, but working better - Almost quadrupling the image content for Pax imperia (with pictures such as moving gif's of nearly all the different types of Pax Imperia fighters, and a couple new desktop pictures as well). But most importantly I found a site that made an unofficial update to the original Pax Imperia - they colored the ship build and ship design screen and made it compatible with the newer versions of Max OS! I also posted the file here on the Game-Gate incase that site dissappears.

Another noteworthy update with the Pax Imperia page is that I posted the most recient PC and Mac updates for the game that I had. For PC users the update allows multiplayer games to be saved - a novel idea!

Along the lines of the Warcraft page is that I can PROUDLY announce that every single link has been tested and is in FULL working order. Currently the Warcraft 2 page is boasting 201 different custom maps spaning single, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight players!! And for those of you who may wish to play Warcraft 2 on older machines, both Mac '.sit' and PC '.zip' files have been provided for each map ALONG with a mini map preview of before you download (that is 603 total files for the WC2 maps!).

I have also posted a new Warcraft 2 MP3 as well as 13 desktop / wallpapers

-Aliens versus Predator 2 - Installation Problems
-February 28, 2004, 04:07 MST:
Vorlon : | Top

Here's an laughable story at myself:

So I had just purchased Aliens versus Predator 2 for my Macintosh, installed it and tried to launch but it kept asking for my Aliens versus Predator 2 CD to be in the computer and it was making me angry because I could clearly SEE the CD mounted on my desktop so I sent the following e-mail to MacPlay:

"Before I even start, let me state that I had this same problem with the latest patch (1.0.9.6 version 33) and straight off the CD install.

The problem that I am experiencing is when I double click on AVP2 it tells me "Alert: Please insert the Aliens vs. Predator 2 CD"

Any and all assistance would be appreciated!

Thank you much for your time
"

Then it took them a nearly an entrire week to reply to me (which I was NOT impressed with btw..)

"Hello,

It sounds as if you have the wrong CD in the drive. You need to have disk #1 in the drive in order to play the game.

Thank you and hope this helps.
"

And I was like "THATS IT!!?"

I had assumed that if a game comes with 2 CD's it will ask me for CD#2 to play (that's based on the assumption that CD#1 is the Install CD). Well NOT IN THIS CASE. I guess it would have helped me if they had named the 2 CD's differently, but they did not.

Overall I am not too impressed with MacPlay's porting of PC games to the Mac OS platform. The games are stable (so far that I've noticed) but one example that left a nasty taste in my mouth is Icewind Dale for MacOS - they do not give you any options in changing the resolution! So your sitting there STUCK in 640x480!! I felt the game was completely UNPLAYABLE in that resolution, I need it to be at LEAST 800x600 - but they failed to do that. (MacPlay also has not ported the expansion set for Icewind Dale (Heart of Winter) or Baldur's Gate 2 (The Throne of Bhaal) which is again dissapointing.

Just announcing 3 new and BEAUTIFUL Halo Wallpaper / Desktop pictures. Honestly after seeing these three the rest off the Halo Desktop pictures look like junk! The first new one can be found at the bottom of the 1024x768 resolution. The other two I had to create a whole new section just for them, found in the 1600x1200 resolution.

Again, I would like to reiterate that The Game-Gate is support by YOU because here you can have your works posted for all to enjoy, whether that be desktop pictures you've created, mods, custom sounds, or (in my opinion) the best of all custom maps and senarios. Progress is going great, the Game-Gate is almost finished being re-formatted. Only the 3 largest pages now remain, The Marathons pages, Starcraft, and Warcraft. And the Starcraft section is WELL on its way. (The down side is that the three afore mentioned sections are the largest on the site so they will take the longest

Further good news is that the Pax Imperia section is working beautifuly, along with Master of Orion - each with several good wallpapers / desktop pictures for you to enjoy!
